Everything About Silverfish

First off, the silverfish in this article is the insect (not the fish).  For those of you who know what I’m talking about they are the critters that eat up your books and cause a social embarrassment when guests are visiting.  This short article will tell you everything you need to know about silverfish so you can better educate yourself on this pest.

Also, silverfish are usually about half of an inch in length and live in-between walls and behind bookcases within your home.  They are called silverfish because they are silvery in color and have a scaly resemblance to a fish, not to mention the fact that their movement mimics the movement of a fish swimming through water.

Silverfish only eat starchy items in their diet.  This include paper, books, photo albums, wallpaper, cardboard, and a few other things.  This is why it’s easy to find them in you bookcases (or near other paper sources).  They usually only emerge at night time because they do not want to be seen.  So if you are looking for silverfish the best way to do so is to turn off all the lights in the room and wait for them to come out.

Silverfish can live to be anywhere from three to five years old and have been known to live as long as eight years.  A female silverfish will lay her eggs in small cracks in the floor or walls to protect them and can lay up to 150 eggs in her lifetime.  The author recommends the following resource for more information on how to get rid of silverfish.
